Workshop

Leading the Next Generation

The community of Young Global Leaders is also engaged in identifying and understanding the environments and challenges of leadership over the coming decades. In 2007, the YGLs worked on an intellectual exercise entitled "Future Mapping for Shaping the Global Agenda" and produced "Trend Compendium 2030", a collection of future trends and weak signals. Based on this identification of trends and signals, the YGLs will work on aspects of future leadership. They will try to differentiate leadership styles around the world and in different types of organizations. The results of this session will be fed into the public session on "New Leadership in the Americas" on 16 March. Moreover, they will also provide content to similar YGL workshops at other World Economic Forum Regional meetings and at the YGL Summit in Tianjin in September 2008. The regional findings will be compared and integrated into an overall leadership study.

Based on the insights of two charismatic leaders in particular fields, the following specific questions will be addressed:

1) What trends will influence leadership styles during the next decade?

2) Can a specific Latin American leadership style be identified and, if so, what are its characteristics?

3) Will the roles of leaders change by 2020? How?

Launch of the "Book of Love" in Latin America

The YGL task force on Climate Change seeks to engage society's leaders to help raise awareness by focusing on business opportunities, spread best practices to change consumer behaviour and reduce CO2 emissions.

Today, the initiative is launching the "Book of Love" in Latin America, a manifesto for global decision-makers in industry and politics that outlines what has already been achieved by companies and individuals committed to low-carbon solutions. It is a blueprint to help other companies take advantage of the new low-carbon economy.

Interactive Session

Latin America's Strategies for Development

Equality and social inclusion should go hand in hand with economic growth. Development strategies designed to include marginalized groups should be at the top of the agenda for policy-makers across Latin America. Although many successful initiatives have been launched there, the size and diversity of the region's population pose a big challenge to ensuring social inclusion, for example when providing adequate services to the poor, such as quality education and health services.

1) What bottlenecks inhibiting investment in key physical and social infrastructure exist?

2) How can business, civil society and government join together in efforts to favour priorities for action and the implementation of sound public policies?

3) How can development strategies be designed so as to include these marginalized groups?

4) What social, political and economic risks may emerge if the issue remains unaddressed?

5) What is the role of multilateral and local development banks?

New Leadership in the Americas

For many years, business leaders have claimed that their activities have social impact. Increased global mobility and the rapid pace of change suggest the need to explore how new business leaders are building new horizons and successfully evolving. These leaders also claim that their activities are more socially conscious than in the past.

1) Are the new business leaders different from those of the past? What has changed? Is the notion that new business leaders are more socially conscious viable?

2) Does the concept of double or triple bottom line compromise shareholder returns? Does this concept yield the short-term results demanded by public markets?

3) How can public and business leaders work together so businesses can have greater social impact? Should governments support social enterprises that create wealth for shareholders?

Roundtable Discussion

Policy Roundtable: Mexico's Successes and Challenges

With resurgent macroeconomic stability in Mexico and some other countries in the region, Mexico in particular and Latin America in general may be at the beginning of an upturn, if the current momentum can be sustained. This policy roundtable aims to understand Mexico's successes and challenges in terms of political stability, macroeconomic management and future economic growth.

1) What risks and challenges, if any, confront the region and what do they imply for Mexico?

2) Can Mexico's future economic trends be predicted?

3) What are the key features of the macroeconomic situation, and how can they be improved to make Mexico more competitive and generate higher growth rates?

4) What has been done to strengthen the rule of law, fight corruption, improve the property rights climate and, more generally, strengthen structural and institutional mechanisms?

5) Which public policies have served as a successful basis for this development and which areas of the public sector need restructuring to increase the efficiency of services delivered?

With

· Felipe Calderón**, President of Mexico

Moderator

· Alejandro Ramírez**, Chief Executive Officer, Cinepolis, Mexico; Young Global Leader
