What is it?

This task force’s vision is to encourage global aid policies that are more effective at improving the lives of the poor and address disillusionment about what aid can achieve.

How does it work?

The task force aims to agree to a set of broad principles that can be used to refocus aid and make it more effectivel and to shift the current debate from whether aid works to how it can be made to work better through discussions with the Young Global Leader (YGL) community, using both online debate and debates with a wider community that includes influential decisionmakers. For more information and to post comments, log on to http://reinventingaid.org/.

What has been achieved   so far?

A considerable consensus around some broad themes emerged from discussions with YGLs in Switzerland, Cambridge and in electronic postings. A website was established to collect different views and comments. Also, discussions were held with external agencies and individuals who have either run or are influential in running aid agencies.

Next steps?

The initiative is currently focusing on compiling the inputs received so far into five principles and circulating the draft principles to a subset of YGLs for feedback.

Unique value
of the YGL contribution:

The YGLs comprise a group of motivated individuals who have experience with this problem from many different perspectives (through working in developing country governments and NGOs, setting policy in rich countries, and focusing on these issues as academics). They have greater flexibility to be creative than others who typically discuss these issues but represent institutional interests.

How can you help make it happen?
