Shaping the future

Why do good people let bad things happen? - Initiative

What is it?

The initiative aims to raise awareness on genocide and genocide prevention. In 1948, the UN solemnly declared that “Never again!” would genocide be tolerated by the international community. Since then, it has become “ever again” in Cambodia, Rwanda and Darfur. Why has the international community failed to prevent these genocides? We propose a 60-90 minute documentary which will consist of a series of interviews with UN officials, politicians and “people on the street”.The style will be non-accusatory and reflectional. It will make clear that in the end genocide will only be prevented if we, the spectators, are willing to risk something by interfering.

What has been achieved   so far?

The team has begun filming interviews and has also received pledges for film funding.

Next steps?

In October 2007 a conference on genocide prevention will be organized in Montreal and will serve as an opportunity to film more interviews and call attention to the initiative. The trailer is intended to be completed by January 2008.

Unique value
of the YGL contribution:

The YGLs can access significant political leaders and conduct interviews with them. Moreover, they are in important positions to demonstrate real thought leadership.

How can you help make it happen?

The project is looking for people with film expertise and those willing to help with fundraising.
